Donation Day
The mission of Peace Pencil has been clear from the start – get a pencil in every kid’s hand. Back in late March, Peace Pencil had the opportunity to donate over 2000+ pencils. To ensure that we could make the biggest impact without singling out certain schools, we decide to donate 1000 pencils to 2 elementary schools in Spring, Texas; Bammel Elementary and Ralph Eickenroht Elementary.
After about a 40-minute drive west, we had reached Bammel Elementary. Once we walked through the doors, we were immediately welcomed by Principal Dr. Berky Hernandez. It was obvious the power and respect that Dr. Hernandez received as we walked through the school to the cafeteria. Once arriving, Dr. Hernandez demanded everyone’s attention by shouting quirky little phrases that the kids would repeat back to her multiple times. She then asked the lunch room who would like some free pencils and all the kids raised their hands. She picked out a few kids to form a single file line as I introduced myself to them individually and handed them a couple of pencils. The whole process of being there took about 10 minutes, but the feeling is still strong. The kids were so polite and grateful for receiving something so basic as a pencil. We said our goodbyes to the kids, leaving the school a big box of pencils. Now we were off to the next school.
Ralph Eickenroht was a little different of an experience as we were not allowed to pass out pencils due to Covid-19. We were greeted at the door by the principal Robbie Green. Robbie was more than engaging, wanting to know how we started and what our goals were with the idea. He gave us pointers on who to donate to next and people to reach out to for selling opportunities. We shook hands and left a box of pencils.
This is what it is all about. We were so grateful that principals of two schools let us walk through their doors with open arms and embraced a product that is completely mandatory in a learning environment. Seeing the kid’s faces light up through their masks puts everything into perspective. It’s a difficult world to grow up in at the moment and showing any kind of positive affirmation is important. Letting them know that you care for them. Letting them know they are worthy of greatness. All of them.
We hope the schools enjoy the pencils and hopefully we can donate so many more!
